GER/GERD Information

Millions of children, teens and adults suffer from reflux or GERD. Here are some practical tips for patients who suffer from symptoms related to reflux:

For infants:

  • Avoid overfeeding, and burp often during feedings
  • Keep infant upright for at least 30 minutes after feeding
  • Avoid use of hard infant seats/use of car seats in the home
  • Avoid tight diapers
  • Avoid exposure to tobacco smoke

For children/teens:

  • Eat smaller meals, more frequently
  • Avoid eating 2-3 hours before bedtime
  • Elevate the head of the bed up to 30 degrees
  • Avoid carbonated drinks, caffeine, chocolate and foods that are high in fat (French fries/pizza), foods that are spicy, and foods that are high in acid (citrus, tomato products, pickles)
  • Avoid large meals prior to exercise
  • Avoid exposure to tobacco smoke
  • Help your child to lose weight if he/she is overweight
